I’ve been ‘analogizing’! Something I picked up from a recent educational document! (They do come out like rashes don’t they?)
It’s a good word, if not a bit clumsy. From my work on technophobia I had come to realise that research had indicated the importance of using an appropriate analogy when introducing new technology, especially to the reluctant. So I started to analogize! What is the role of a glo mentor? I’m sure we’ll be told, in glowing detail, but it does strike me that we have two obvious roles: to be a Driving Instructor and a Tour Guide!
An instructor helps you handle the car, learn it’s features, but the purpose of learning is not to pass! It’s to go places. And that is when you need the tour guide- to show you the sites, point the way and make recommendations. Perhaps some mentors are more skilled at one over the other? Which am I? Or should I use the clipboard and the umbrella.
So, what do you think: helpful, or should I keep taking tablets?!

A very good analogy, Graham, and very apt. As for which one you are better at – hmmmm, keep taking the tablets but use the umbrella. As for the word “analogizing”, I can’t even say it.
I agree with Graham, Graham! I suspect the role of Mentor will be a bit of both – early on, people will need their hands held (even though driving instructors shouldn’t do that – I digress), but once people get used to it, it’ll definitely be more about where people can go. I’d love to hear what others think!
Well, I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m looking foreward to my first lesson so I can get out to see the sites, and this is me as a Mentor! I just hope I can find first gear………….
A great annn…anall…..anloly……whatever it is!
I analogise(not sure about the z) on a very simple basis. Mrs Moffat’s babies are the laptops. Are they sleeping? Should we put them to bed now? Are they comfy? How do we know? Glow mentor.. I think ..go with the flow. We’re not in the euphemistic driving seat yet, but I am looking at the brochures, thinking about buying the car, as you are yourself. Hang in there, there’s exciting stuff to come, where you might not need the pills or the umbrella.
Thanks everyone. And, Marlyn, I love the idea of the ‘babies’
[clipboard & umbrella are the tools of those trades!]
